Ambassador Martin Selmayr at the Ceremony of the Capitani Regenti

San Marino is the oldest still existing Republic in the world. According to its constitution, it changes its Heads of State-the Capitani Regenti – twice a year by election, on 1 April and on 1 October. The traditional Change-of-Capitans – Ceremony always brings the diplomatic corps form Rome to San Marino – a good moment for deepening diplomatic relations. San Marino has diplomatic relations with 154 countries, with the EU, the Holy See and the Order of Malta. It is a Member of the United Nations and many International Organisations. As the EU Ambassador is accredited to San Marino, he participated on Monte Titano together with many other Ambassadors and exchanged views on the geopolitical situation.

The EU has diplomatic relations with San Marino since 1983 and forms together a Customs Union. A Monetary Agreement allows San Marino to use the euro and produce euro coins. An Association Agreement between the EU and San Marino has been in the making since more than 10 years and should be finalised very soon.
