Working together for the future of FAO

At the FAO Council in Rome today, the EU and its 27 Member States, together with our friends and colleagues from all other regions, worked for and supported consensual decisions on the future of this important UN organisation. We set up two Working Groups which will draft concrete reform recommendations regarding (1) Governance and Mandate Implementation; (2) Operational Strategy (Human Resources, Organizational Design, Risk Management). In line with the UN80 process, we want to strengthen the capacity of FAO to deliver efficiently on its mandate (food security and sustainable agrifood systems) in these challenging times, while avoiding duplication with other UN agencies, notably with WFP.

Congratulations to the newly appointed co-chairs from Ecuador, France, Kenya and the United Kingdom(all in their personal capacity) who deserve all our support over the next months in their challenging task. And thanks a lot to Mina Rizk, Independent Chairperson of the Council (ICC) for his very efficient leadership in our deliberations today.
