An intense week has come to a conclusion at the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome. Following a historic visit of Pope Leo XIV, who appealed to all of us to renew multilateralism as efficient instrument in the fight against hunger in the world, the Executive Board of WFP - which this year is chaired by Brazil’s experienced Ambassador Carla Barroso Carneiro and includes 8 EU Member States as well as the EU as observer - adopted Country Strategic Plans for Türkiye, Cuba, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia and Somalia.

The EU worked for a broadest possible consensus behind these decisions to swiftly bring help to people in need. Multilateralism is hard work and requires compromises. Ambassador Martin Selmayr was grateful for the work carried out by the committed and unified TeamEurope. He also praised the WFP’s impressive management under Carl Skau and staff who all work tirelessly and under often extraordinary circumstances in order to save lives and change lives in the many crisis hotspots in the world.
