In addition, the launch of the Liverpool European Festival, organised by the Polish Embassy, the Lord Mayor, and Merseyside Polonia, highlighted the city’s vibrant multicultural scene and its historical connections with Europe.
EU Ambassador to the UK, Pedro Serrano, echoed the sentiment: “This is the first time that that we will mark Europe Day outside of the capital, a testament to the pivotal role that cities like Liverpool play in fostering growth, innovation and friendship between our citizens. The EU itself is more than a community of nations, but also of cities and regions, and we look forward to fostering the ties between the EU and this region”.

A Celebratory Milestone in a Year of Reflection
The timing of the gathering also provided the poignant moment for the assembled dignitaries to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day coinciding as it does with the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Schuman Declaration itself, the foundational act of the European Union and the reason for which May 9th holds such significance for the Union.
