How the EU connects with Youth

EU-UK Youth relations

Young people are at the heart of EU-UK relationship. With over 12 million young people (18-30), youth is essential in building stronger connections between the UK and the EU.

And the EU Delegation to the UK aims to do just that. Through the vibrant activities of the Delegation's annual Youth Dialogues, European Affairs Societies Network (EASN) and the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) - the EU Delegation to the UK works to engage, empower and connect young people in the UK and the EU. We aim to amplify the voice of young people in decision-making. The EU-UK Youth Action Plan also addresses inequalities and creates networking opportunities. It is understood that programmes like Erasmus+ are pivotal in strengthening these ties.

Youth Dialogues

Beyond the boundries...

The EU Delegation organises an annual large scale conference of young people and youth organisations from across sectors and regions. The key objective of the Youth Dialogues is meaningful policy dialogue with youth in the UK, with representatives from the four nations and the nine English regions, as well as a variety of other sectors.

The annual youth dialogues are designed to:

  • Identify key issues for youth in the UK and the participants´ views on EU-UK relations;
  • Provide a forum for the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) to hear the views of young people in the UK
  • Lay the foundations for engagement with youth in the UK, including action at local level
  • Discuss the challenges facing youth engagement in the UK and youth engagement in the EU, and foster links between UK and EU youth
  • Encourage networking among the groups, follow-up at local level and potential joint activities that could take place

EASN – European Affairs Societies Network

Bringing the EU Affairs societies from across UK Universities together

Student societies and associations are a central part of the student experience here in the UK, and the Delegation began to build particular contacts with the European Affairs societies in Universities across the country. The European Affairs Societies found across UK universities focus on fostering good relations between the UK and the UK and the values of the European Union. The societies provide a platform for student-led collaboration designed to deepen connections with EU institutions.  They are open to British students, EU students and international students interested in European Affairs.

Energised by the same ideas but working in isolation..the idea for a Network took root.

As the Delegation worked on building on its contacts across the UK, it was thought wouldn’t it be a good idea to put the societies in contact? Wouldn’t it be great to amplify the existing platforms by pooling energies – and from that thought grew the idea to bring the already established European Affairs Societies together to form a Network.
