Europe Day 2022 – marking 72 years of the European Union – working for Peace and Security, celebrating the European Year of Youth and highlighting our unity and solidarity with Ukraine.

06.05.2022

Europe Day commemorates the signing of the 'Schuman Declaration' on 9 May 1950 – the ambitious plan to secure long-term peace in post-war Europe that is considered the beginning of what is now the European Union. Europe Day marks this anniversary while reflecting the steadfast political, financial and humanitarian support the EU is showing Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Europe Day also helps shine a light on the fact that 2022 is officially European Year of Youth – which promotes the importance of the voice of youth in everything the European Union does and stands for.

The EU Delegation to the UK kicked off its own programme of events to mark Europe Day 2022 (#EuropeDayUK2022) with a visit by Ambassador João Vale de Almeida to Lancaster University to deliver a keynote lecture as part of the University’s Jean Monnet EU Studies programme (more details available here). The Ambassador’s outreach with students in Lancaster, as with previous educational visits throughout the year, brings focus on the importance of the Delegation’s engagement with young people across the UK – in particular in this European Year of Youth. During his visit to Lancaster the Ambassador held a series of meetings including with the University Vice Chancellor Andy Schofield and local MPs to discuss the future ahead for EU-UK cooperation in science, research and higher education.

Further underlining European solidarity, our events continue on Saturday May 7th, when, in conjunction with EUNIC London and the Institut Français du Royaume-Uni, the EU Delegation to the UK presents ‘In Short, Europe’, a film festival highlighting the outstanding short film work from 25 European countries in animation, fiction and documentary – including work from Ukraine. For more on the festival please follow on Twitter here and catch up on press reviews of the programme here.

Finally on Europe Day itself, May 9th there will be an in-person live concert at St Johns, Smith Square (unfortunately sold out). The concert presents a host of talented musicians from the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. The COE, has strong links with many of the major festivals and concert halls in Europe including the Kammermusiksaal der Philharmonie in Berlin, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt.

In addition to a varied classical programme, the Orchestra will play both the Ukrainian national anthem and the European Union anthem, Beethoven Ode to Joy. The concert is supported by the EU Delegation to the UK, the Cultural Relations Platform and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK.
