The EU Delegation to the UK hosted, in partnership with the Centre for European Reform, a panel event devoted to the impact of the 2004 enlargement of the EU when the citizens of Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia joined the EU family.

With introductory remarks by Ambassador Pedro Serrano who underscored how the 2004 enlargement was a defining moment for the EU, the event set out to reflect not only the importance of that historical expansion but also where the discussion of further EU enlargement might take us.

In front of a full house, with a significant representation of London's Diplomatic community, the event sought to reflect on where the EU might be directed with the latest membership negotiations just launched with Ukraine and Moldova. The topic of the day was to work through the successes of enlargement, on its challenges, and take stock of what future rounds may mean for the EU's institutional architecture.

A thought provoking event, skillfully chaired by Ian Bond, it also marked the beginning of the public diplomacy partnership of the EU Delegation and CER and bodes well for a fruitful partnership ahead!.
