"Taste of Europe": Celebrating European foods and EU-UK Trade Opportunities

Europe House welcomed the inaugural "Taste of Europe" event on April 2, uniting 18 Member State embassies, 30 companies, and showcasing over 40 European product categories - all under one roof! The gathering offering the chance to explore the opportunities to explore, taste, connect with suppliers, distributors, food professionals...and experience the #TasteOfEurope proudly presented by EU Member States!

For one day only, Europe House was given over to the celebration of European food culture and trade during the inaugural "Taste of Europe" event. Uniting 18 Member State embassies, 30 companies, and showcasing over 40 European product categories. All brought together to explore the opportunities in EU-UK food trade arena. 

This exciting event was a lively celebration of Europe's rich culinary traditions, blending classics with innovative food and drink offerings from across the EU.

The event featured a wide array of products and offered a fantastic opportunity to connect with suppliers, distributors, industry professionals, and diplomats to connect and fostering new collaborations or indeed strengthen existing partnerships.

European Embassies and Key Stakeholders Come Together

Representatives from numerous embassies and high commissions attended, including those of Belgium, Estonia, the Czech Republic, France, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Oman, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia. Highlighting and promoting the high-quality food and drink found.

Insights and Takeaways from the Experts

The event also featured insightful panel discussions moderated by industry experts and policy makers:

Taste of Europe

  • Trade and Food Security: John Alistair Clarke and Sam Lowe emphasized the role of trade in ensuring food security, noting that the UK is the EU’s top export partner with EUR 50 billion in agri-food exports to the UK in 2023. They highlighted the importance of EU quality labels, which signify traditional production methods and territorial authenticity.
  • Import Challenges: A focus on the practical hurdles faced by importers, including tariffs, bureaucracies, and divergent regulations within the UK. The panel called on policymakers on both sides of the channel to facilitate smoother trade processes and support producers and traders.
  • Consumer Trends and Innovation: Katharine Mason and Gavin Rothwell explored how food and drink are deeply woven into social and cultural experiences. EU producers continue to honor beloved traditions while innovating to meet evolving UK consumer preferences.

The event reinforced that European food and drink are more than just economic commodities—they foster community, nourishment, and cultural exchange. Despite challenges, the commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation remains strong. The event ended with an enthusiastic call for continued collaboration to unlock new opportunities for importing and enjoying European products in the UK.
