"Use your Vote!" - EU citizens gather in Europe House to discuss how to increase participation in European elections

Representatives of the EU diaspora and support organisations gather at Europe House to discuss participation in and mobilisation for the upcoming European elections.

In a stirring display of engagement and against the backdrop of vibrant flags representing various EU nations, over a hundred representatives of EU diaspora and support organisations converged in London to discuss participation in and mobilisation for the upcoming European elections. Hosted under the banner "Together for EU citizens and Democracy," the event served to rally community engagement among Europeans residing in the UK.

In her opening remarks, Nicole Mannion, Deputy EU Ambassador to the UK highlighted that "Together for EU Citizens and Democracy" served as a reminder of the strength found in unity and diversity: "One of the most powerful ways we can shape the future is through active participation in our democratic processes, particularly the upcoming European elections. These elections are not just about choosing our representatives; they're about shaping the direction of this continent, influencing policies that affect our lives, and building a stronger, more inclusive Europe.”

Panel discussion highlighted the importance of preserving European unity and advocating for increased involvement of citizens in the democratic process. Representatives from EU diaspora organizations shared personal stories of resilience and belonging, underscoring the vital role of community support networks, discussing shared values and diversity that define the European Union.

One of the focal points of the event was the upcoming European elections taking place in June. Participants gained valuable insights into the electoral process and the significance of their vote in shaping the future of Europe, as well as detailed understanding of the voting process.

Susanne Oberhauser, Head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK noted: "We know that participation in the European elections from the UK is not as straightforward as if we were living in the EU and in our respective Member States. Each country has different modalities and rules for the participation of its citizens, and indeed many of our citizens are not aware about their rights and how to exercise them. And this is where you come in: we need your help in reaching those citizens. You know your communities, and you speak their language. This makes you trusted voices they are much more likely to listen to. Our message is clear: Do make your voice heard, because if you do not vote, others will decide for you."

"Your voices matter now more than ever. EU citizens, no matter where they live, should be actively engaged on these elections," noted Aude Maio-Coliche, director for Strategic Communication & Foresight at the European External Action Service.
