The Sahel is facing a lethal combination of security, humanitarian, and political crises. Since the start of 2019, violent events across Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have resulted in nearly 10,000 fatalities. Ongoing extremism, climate change, and food insecurity have additionally forced more than 2.5 million people to flee their homes. Local governments are struggling to address the insecurity, and political challenges are mounting. In mid-August, the Malian military ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita after months of protests calling for his resignation.

On October 16, 2020, the EU Delegation will partner with the CSIS Africa Program to host a virtual livestream event examining the state of play in the Sahel, key priorities for regional and international stakeholders, and challenges and opportunities for coordination. The event will feature a panel discussion between Ambassador Ángel Losada Fernandez (The European Union (EU) Special Representative to the Sahel), Ambassador Maman Sidikou (Executive Secretary of G5 Sahel), and Ambassador J. Peter Pham (U.S. Special Envoy to the Sahel Region). The event will also feature pre-recorded opening remarks from France’s Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly, and live opening remarks from Torge Gerlach, Chief Executive Officer of DT Global.
