Featured Puppet Performance: Tillie the Terrible Swede, by Cinna Vesterberg

Meet the incredible Matilda "Tillie" Anderson, a young Swedish immigrant who arrived in Chicago in 1891 and went on to become one of the fastest women cyclists in the world. This lively 30-minute puppet show brings Tillie's inspiring true story to life through humor, adventure, and unforgettable characters. Recommended for children ages 4-10.

The Czech Embassy will host its fourth annual Strašidla - Czech Legends and Mythical Creatures, an evening of scares and thrills for young children, on October 22, 2026. (Book session below.) Explore a new trail and exciting characters.

Ever heard of the Noonday or Twilight Witch, Headless Knight, Forest Demon, or the Water Goblin? Join us for a glimpse into Czech fairy tales and folklore. An introduction to Czech mythical creatures will be followed by a walk, intended for children’s amusement, through the haunted forest upon the grounds of the Czech Embassy. Pondering Czech legends, adults will enjoy understanding the origins and explanations behind the most notorious, intriguing, and a few lovable, fictitious yet legendary sprites, spirits, and ghosts.

As part of the event, the amazing Science Guys will also showcase hands-on, bubbling, and engaging experiments for kids.

This event is intended for children ages 5-10 years old.

Hosted by the DC Public Library's Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library at the Goethe-Institut, join Shaw Library staff for a 30-minute story time designed for ages 0–5. Promoting early literacy skills through books, songs, rhymes, and movement, Family Story Time is a great way to further your child’s lifelong love of reading and learning. The whole family is encouraged to participate!
