Family Day

Experience a little bit of everything in one place! Bring the whole family to the MLK Library for this year's family day on October 19, 2024, with performances, crafts, and workshops from over a dozen European embassies — each dedicated to teaching and entertaining children ages 4-10. This event is FREE, but registration is required.

KEF Goes Green!

This year’s activities highlight one of the European Union’s core values: sustainability. From crafting with recycled materials to learning how to tackle climate change, together we can help protect our planet.

Performances: 10:15am – 2:00pm

(Stage located in Right Atrium next to Great Hall)

10:15am: Join-In Children’s Concert from Bernhard Fibich (Austria)

The popular Austrian children’s songwriter is back to Kids Euro Fest, with new songs entirely in English! Children and adults are invited to participate in this performance — and even are invited to come up on stage!

11:15am: Traditional Dance from the Bulgarian Educational School (Bulgaria)

Bulgaria will participate in this year’s Kids Euro Fest with a vibrant dance and theater performance by the Bulgarian Educational School.

11:45am: Bernhard Fibich Children's Concert (Austria)

The popular Austrian children’s songwriter is back to Kids Euro Fest, with new songs entirely in English! Children and adults are invited to participate in this performance — and even are invited to come up on stage!

12:45pm: Mime and Magic Show by Hakim (Netherlands)

Hakim is a Dutch-Algerian theater and mime artist, known to large and small audiences for his role in [the Dutch] Sesame Street. In addition to his TV performances, Hakim also does theater and cabaret performances, tells stories and writes books. He draws his inspiration from the strange problems of the adult world and translates them succinctly and humorously to the world of children.

1:45pm: Dance Performance by the Flying Steps (Germany)

Be prepared to be wowed by a performance of the internationally-renowned dance crew, Flying Steps. The group was founded in Berlin in 1993 and has since gained worldwide fame. Based on their new stage show “Flying Hänsel and Gretel,” the dance crew will perform choreography showcasing the influence of dance on youth and social media.

Bulgaria: Children’s Arts and Crafts with the Bulgarian Educational School

Join us at our special crafts table, where kids can create a green map of Bulgaria and learn about sustainability in a fun and engaging way.

Cyprus: Flora and Fauna Puzzles and Design Workshop

Join us to play and learn about Cyprus flora and fauna, let’s decorate our station with your drawings!

Estonia: Eco-friendly Fall Crafts for Kids

Family fun Estonian style for kids and parents alike with sustainable fall crafts (natural acorn crafts, coloring, fun worksheets).

European Union: Climate Education Workshop

Take our climate science quiz and learn how you can tackle climate change with Climate Fresk, an NGO dedicated to accelerating the understanding of climate issues at the global level. Visitors will have the chance to register for a collaborative Climate Fresk workshop taking place later in the year.

France (Alliance Française): Book Readings and Games on Recycling (Ending at 1pm)

Reduce, re-use, recycle—join us for an environmentally-friendly challenge and learn more about France’s approach to recycling!

Germany: Recycling Craft Station and SDG Wheel of Fortune

Create your own paper flowers using newspapers at our recycling craft station! Learn about and test your knowledge on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals with our SDG Wheel of Fortune and quiz questions.

Italy: Geronimo Stilton Readings (Ending at 1pm)

Join our book readings and creative activities featuring Geronimo Stilton and Timpa. Follow our beloved characters on their Italian journey, discovering the blue wonders of the Italian coastline, biodiversity and culture. A new session will begin every 30 minutes, with the last session concluding at 1pm. Presented by the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington and Fiorenza Castelli.

Latvia: Ice Melting Workshop & Coloring

Play a game and test your knowledge on the speed that ice melts and impacts animals across the world. Also join us in coloring the “My Little Latvia Book” and see the best of Latvian culture and art!

Portugal: Recycled Wing Art Workshop

Come and enjoy a collective art workshop by New York based Portuguese artist Inês Tique. Bring your creativity to help create two giant wings using recycled materials! If you could fly and had the power to change environmental issues, what would you do? In this workshop you’ll see that working together we can go further and come up with solutions to solve important issues.

Spain: Educational Jeopardy Game

Play our Jeopardy game and test your knowledge of Spanish food, culture and traditions! Would you like to be Don Quijote or Sancho Panza? Stop by and make your own picture.
