TSTI - Building a Resilient Future Together

TSTI is an EU-U.S. collaborative program on Sustainable Agriculture, Energy Efficiency in Buildings, and the Circular Economy. It develops practical solutions and innovative approaches for long-term resilience and resource efficiency in the United States.

TSTI, the Transatlantic Sustainable Transition Initiative, is a multi-year collaborative project between the EU and U.S., led by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States. The initiative works with federal, state, and local actors, focusing on three main priorities:

  • Sustainable Agriculture
  • Energy Efficiency in Buildings
  • Circular Economy

The key objectives of TSTI are:

  • Foster Awareness: Increase visibility and recognition of the economic and workforce advantages of resilient, resource-efficient, local economic development. This includes promoting future-proofed agriculture practices, energy efficiency solutions, and circular economy innovations.
  • Develop Communities of Practice: Establish transatlantic collaboration at federal, state, local, community, and academic levels to facilitate the exchange of best practices, innovations and strategies.
  • Advance European Sustainability Priorities: Promote the development of actions that support long-term resilience, resource efficiency and growth, benefiting local economies on both sides of the Atlantic.

Key activities include:

  • Cross-cutting Transatlantic Cooperation Seminar Series: Fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration among professionals, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers across all three of TSTI’s priority areas.
  • Fellowship Program for Young Leaders in Agriculture: Providing a unique opportunity for young farmers and ranchers from the EU and U.S. to discuss and increase understanding of policies, programs, key challenges and best practices, generating solutions to improve long-term resilience and profitability in agriculture, as well as enhancing their leadership, negotiation and advocacy skills.
  • EU-U.S. Exchanges to Advance Policies for Energy-Efficient Buildings: Facilitating connections between subnational policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholder partners to advance practical and effective approaches aimed at improving energy efficiency in buildings and reducing energy costs. This program explores policy structure and design, approaches to education and engagement to increase adoption, and funding/financing models related to subnational building codes, Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) and Certificates, Demand Side Management (DSM) programs, and financing mechanisms.
  • EU-U.S. Exchanges to Advance Circular Economy Policies and Practices: Bringing together subnational policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholder partners to promote practical and effective approaches to advance circular economy solutions in the packaging, textiles, and battery sectors. This initiative explores policy frameworks and best practices through a series of knowledge exchanges with major U.S. cities and states. The goal is to support the development of policies and programs that remove barriers to circular economy implementation, stimulate investment in effective long-term material management, and foster collaboration on solutions to reduce waste generation. Additionally, the initiative aims to enhance recycling infrastructure, scale circular business models, and leverage AI-driven innovations.
