The Transatlantic Sustainable Transition Initiative (TSTI), launched by FPI and the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, is a multi-year collaborative project between the EU and U.S. The initiative works with federal, state, and local actors, focusing on three main priorities:
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Energy Efficiency in Buildings
- Circular Economy
The key objectives of the TSTI are:
- Foster Awareness: Increase visibility and recognition across U.S. populations of the economic and workforce advantages of local green economy development. This includes promoting sustainable agriculture practices, energy efficiency transitions, and circular economy innovations.
- Develop Communities of Practice: Establish transatlantic collaboration at federal, state, local, community, and academic levels to facilitate the exchange of best practices, innovations and strategies
- Advance European Sustainability Priorities: Promote the development of actions that align with Europe's sustainability priorities.
Key activities will include:
- A cross-cutting Sustainable Futures Seminar Series to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration among professionals, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers across all three of TSTI’s priority areas.
- A Fellowship Program for Young Leaders in Agriculture to provide a unique opportunity for young leaders from the EU and U.S. to discuss and increase understanding of policies, programs, key challenges and best practices, generating solutions for how to improve the long-term sustainability and profitability in agriculture, as well as enhancing their leadership, negotiation and advocacy kills.
- EU-U.S. Exchanges to Advance Policies for Energy-Efficient Buildings to facilitate connections between subnational policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholder partners to advance practical and effective approaches aimed at improving energy efficiency in buildings and reducing energy costs. This program aims to explore policy structure and design, approaches to education and engagement to increase adoption, and funding/financing models related to subnational building codes, Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) and Certificates, Demand Side Management (DSM) programs, and financing mechanisms.
- EU-U.S. Exchanges to Advance Circular Economy Policies and Practices in the packaging, textiles, and battery sectors to bring together subnational policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholder partners to explore practical and effective approaches to advance circular economy solutions. Through a series of knowledge exchanges, this initiative will collaborate with major U.S. cities and states to explore policy frameworks and best practices. The goal is to develop policies and programs that remove barriers to circular economy implementation, stimulate investment in sustainable material management, and foster collaboration on solutions to reduce waste generation. Additionally, the initiative aims to enhance recycling infrastructure, scale circular business models, and leverage AI-driven innovations.
