Webinar "The European Union vs. Fake News"

The European Union Delegation to Uruguay organised a virtual conference to analyse the growing problem of disinformation and to discuss strategies to counter it.

The Webinar took place on 9 June. Participants included Government authorities, journalists, academics and representatives of most sectors of Uruguayan civil society.

The event Moderator, Nicolás Lussich (a journalist, presenter, TV host and columnist for several Uruguayan media) was in charge of welcoming participants, after which the opening speech was given by EU Ambassador Karl-Otto König.

The keynote speech was given by Carme Colomina (a journalist, researcher and EU specialist), the expert from the College of Europe on disinformation.

Conference Programme:

  1. General definition of fake news and disinformation.
  2. The EU's approach to fighting this scourge.
  3. The incidence of disinformation at different levels of public and private life, and in particular, in international relations.
  4. A look at the new privacy rules and handling of personal information.
  5. The social media interaction strategy and the situation of traditional media.
  6. Analysis of cases related to the political sphere and the current pandemic.

After the main speech, an exchange of views was held between Carme Colomina and Martin Aguirre (Editor-in-chief of top daily newspaper El País and journalism professor at the University of Montevideo).

After that, there were interventions by experts from the participating partner institutions (the University of Montevideo, the Uruguayan Press Association and INFOK - a private initiative dedicated to fighting disinformation). Once these interventions were over, there was a space for Q&A. The event closed with final words from EU Ambassador König.
