Today, 30 September 2021, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), launched an EU funded website on the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT). This marks another implementation milestone for the 5 Million Euro funded EU Council Decision (CFSP) 2018/1939, implemented together with the UNODC in Vienna and the UN Counter Terrorism Office (UNOCT) in New York.

During the virtual launch event, Ambassador Stephan Klement, Head of the EU Delegation to International Organisations in Vienna, stressed that the EU continued to work actively on measures to enhance nuclear security globally, including by promoting the universalisation of ICSANT. He expressed the hope that the new website will ‘‘help States to better implement their obligations, and finally lead to an even greater number of States joining this important convention.’’

Highlighting ICSANT as an ‘‘essential instrument for international peace and security’’, UNODC Executive Director and Under-Secretary of the United Nations, Ghada Waly, expressed her gratitude for EU’s support to UNODC and emphasised that, by joining forces, through ICSANT we can work towards a world free of nuclear terrorism.

The new website contains all available resources on ICSANT, inc­­luding: a collection of all existing national legislation implementing ICSANT in all States Parties; a collection of good practices and model legislation; and 12 one-hour webinars on different aspects of ICSANT (four in English, four in French and four in Spanish).
