EU Statement on “The illegal so-called presidential elections held in the occupied Abkhazia region of Georgia“(Current Issue raised by Georgia)

 

  1. The European Union recalls its firm support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. 

  2. Regarding the so-called “presidential elections” that took place in the Georgian occupied breakaway region of Abkhazia on 15 February 2025, we recall that the European Union does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework in which they took place. 

  3. The EU condemns the continued illegal Russian military presence and activities in Georgia and expresses its concern with regard to the severe and lasting impact the conflict has on the overall security situation in Georgia and the wider region, as well as on the well-being of the conflict-affected populations. 

  4. The EU remains firmly committed to peaceful conflict resolution and its policy of non-recognition and engagement, including through the work of the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia. 

Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Republic of Moldova, San Marino and Ukraine align themselves with this statement.
