New intake of Vietnamese students for Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees

The Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam is pleased to announce the first selection of Vietnamese students taking part in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) over the 2021-2027 period. 40 Vietnamese students will be taking part in 26 higher-education programmes in 15 European countries, making up 22 per cent of total figures for Asia (185 new students) and 6.6 per cent of the incoming worldwide take-up (601 new students).

Within the framework of the larger Erasmus+ initiative, the EMJMD awards EU-funded scholarships to Master students from around the world covering tuition, travel, and a living allowance. The programmes last from one to two years during which students study in at least two different European countries, and obtain a joint degree, a double degree, or multiple degrees. In the period between 2014 and 2020, 197 Vietnamese students received full EMJMD scholarships, constituting the third-highest tally in South East Asia over the cycle.

This year's EMJMD scholarship recipients have previously undertaken their studies in Vietnamese localities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue and Thai Nguyen, as well as some other places overseas. The programmes they are joining as part of EMJMD cover a wide range of disciplines – from Development Policy, Economics, Chemistry, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Public Health, to Forestry and Natural Resources Management.

Speaking about the scholarships awarded to the Vietnamese students in the first selection, EU Ambassador to Vietnam Giorgio Aliberti said: “One of the world’s best-known scholarship programmes, the prestigious EMJMD forms part of the Erasmus+ initiative and offers scholarships and grants for studying in different European countries. It is true to say that studying in Europe will enable you to bring back to Vietnam not only what’s taught in lecture theatres and libraries, but also a unique experience across historical, cultural, social, innovative and personal dimensions. What you will bring back home to Vietnam is your own Europe, and it will truly open your mind.”

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. It has an estimated budget of €26.2 billion, nearly double the funding compared to its predecessor programme (2014-2020). The 2021-2027 programme places a strong focus on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life.
