My Brilliant Friend (European Literature Days 2022)


The novel "My brilliant friend" (first of a tetralogy) is dedicated to the story of two little girls from a neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples in 1950s. Both very intelligent, intolerant of the rigid rules of behavior of the neighborhood where they live, they are bound by a close friendship since their childhood; at the end of elementary school, however, their lives separate: one continues her studies, while the other can’t afford it. The lives of the two girls, however, continue to intertwine, and their friendship changes more and more as soon as the first sentimental complications occur.

Elena Ferrante (Naples, 1953?) is the author of Troubling Love, The Days of Abandonment, The Lost Daughter, all turned into homonymous popular films. In 2011, L’Amica geniale was published, the first of four books, translated into 40 languages ​​and adapted into the popular Italian-American drama series.

Elena Ferrante is a pseudonym and there are several hypotheses on the true identity of the author, none of which has been fully verified. 


Nguyen Minh Nguyet (Hanoi, 1989), after studying Italian language and culture in Italy (Palermo) and in Vietnam, taught Italian at the Dante Alighieri School in Hanoi. Since 2017 she has been a lecturer at the Italian Department of the Hanu (Hanoi University). L’Amica Geniale is her fifth translation from Italian.
