EU diplomats conclude visit to Aden

European Union Ambassador to Yemen Gabriel Munuera Viñals, Ambassador of France to Yemen Jean-Marie Safa, Ambassador of Germany to Yemen Hubert Jaeger, Italian Special Envoy for Yemen Gianfranco Petruzzella, Ambassador of Portugal to Yemen Nuno Mathias, Deputy Ambassador of Ireland Alan Ralph and Deputy Ambassador of Sweden Eric Salmgren von Schantz today concluded a joint visit to Aden. Ambassador of Norway to Yemen Thomas Lid Ball had also joined this mission.



 

During their meeting with the President Rashad al-Alimi, the Ambassadors underscored their continued support for the President and PLC’s unity to address the steep challenges the country has been facing. The Ambassadors expressed their appreciation of President al-Alimi’s commitment to peace and reforms in Yemen.

 

The Ambassadors also met Foreign Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak, Minister of Defence Mohsen al-Daeri, Deputy Minister of Finance Hani Wahhab, Governor of the CBY Ahmed Ghaleb al-Maabaqi, Minister of Planning & International Cooperation Waed Badhib and Minister of Human Rights Ahmed Arman. They encourage the Government of Yemen to continue implementing reforms, improve service delivery and stabilise the economy.

 

The Ambassadors visited several EU-funded projects in Aden, where they had first-hand experience of the activities and impact of EU-funded interventions. They met girls excited to be back in school, learning in a safe environment, as well as with young female cultural restoration experts and individual creative practitioners, witnessing the transformative power of arts and culture for conflict-affected populations. They saw the results of investments in the processing of dairy products as well as solar energy, which provides undisrupted electricity to rural homes. In their meetings with Yemeni authorities, the Ambassadors stressed the importance of a conducive operating environment for humanitarian and development work. They had very useful exchanges with partners and beneficiaries on the ground. The EU and its Member States are among Yemen’s top donors. The Ambassadors visited Aden port and had a meeting with Yemeni coast guards. They also visited HSA group facilities in Aden Port.

 

The EU Heads of Mission reiterated the European Union’s unflinching support for the work of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, reiterating the call for constructive engagement with his efforts to extend and expand the truce and turn it into a just and inclusive political settlement.
