Together for Peace: Advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda and the fight against Gender-Based Violence in Yemen
The European Union has launched a new campaign highlighting the vital role of Yemeni women and men in building peace and confronting gender-based and digital violence. In 2025, the world marks 25 years since the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) — a landmark recognition that women’s leadership in peace and security is essential to achieving sustainable peace. Further coinciding with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the campaign celebrates the courage of Yemenis who are advocating for equality, safety, and inclusion, both online and in their communities.
For more than two decades, the WPS Agenda, has called for women’s full, equal, and meaningful participation in peace and security efforts. In Yemen, women have served since long as mediators, community leaders, and peacebuilders within their families and neighbourhoods, often supported by men who advocate inclusion and challenge social norms that perpetuate discrimination and violence.
The campaign, titled “Together for Peace,” features stories and reflections from Yemeni women and men working across diverse sectors, including human rights, media, law, and community development. Through testimonials and infographics, the campaign explores how Yemenis are using both online and offline spaces to promote dialogue, protect rights, and foster understanding despite the challenges of conflict and rising digital threats.
EU Ambassador to Yemen Patrick Simonnet: The EU is committed to empowering Yemeni women, including in the areas of peace and security. We continue to advocate for the meaningful participation of Yemeni women in peacebuilding and to ensure they have the means and opportunities to help shape the country’s future.
Digital spaces have become powerful tools for advocacy and awareness but also a growing source of risk. As more Yemenis use social media to speak up for change, they are also at higher risk of cyberbullying, disinformation, and online intimidation. The campaign highlights digital violence as a serious form of gender-based violence that affects both women and men while disproportionately silencing women’s voices in public life.
Through this campaign, the European Union emphasizes that advancing peace in Yemen requires partnership, protection, and participation from all. The campaign seeks to inspire dialogue, strengthen solidarity among Yemenis, and encourage both women and men to stand together against violence in all its forms, whether on the streets or across digital platforms. Through its promotion of respect, equality, and collaboration, the EU reaffirms its long-standing commitment to supporting Yemen’s journey toward an inclusive and lasting peace.

Building Peace through Partnership: EU’s support to the Peace Support Facility in Yemen
The European Union remains a steadfast partner in Yemen’s path toward peace and stability. The Peace Support Facility (PSF) — co-financed by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, in cooperation with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office for Yemen (UNRCO) and the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSYESGY) — is an initiative designed to strengthen national and local capacities for peace, empower women and youth, and promote inclusive participation across Yemen.
The Peace Support Facility provides an adaptable platform that responds to Yemen’s evolving peace and development priorities. It connects national institutions with local communities and supports initiatives that make peacebuilding efforts more inclusive and sustainable. Technical assistance and targeted interventions help translate peace commitments into tangible progress on the ground while reinforcing long-term recovery and institutional resilience.
The Facility has made significant contributions to advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Yemen. With support from the PSF, the Women Research and Training Centre at the University of Aden established a Peacebuilding Network that now includes around one hundred active members. The network promotes women’s participation in peace processes through training, research and community engagement, encouraging both women and men to contribute to dialogue and advocacy on gender equality and peace.
