Yemen, the EU and the OECD act together to promote economic resilience
The European Union (EU), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Yemeni government, represented by the Yemeni Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MoPIC), met today to launch the implementation of the project “Promoting Economic Resilience in Yemen”.
“Years of conflict in Yemen have largely destroyed the economic infrastructure of the country and left millions of Yemenis in need of emergency assistance to survive,” says the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the EU Delegation to Yemen, Mrs. Marion Lalisse. “It is time for Yemen and the international community to act jointly. This project will ultimately contribute to rehabilitating the economic fabric, preserving the resilience of economic actors and increasing the purchasing power of people throughout Yemen”.
“We consider that it is fundamental to address the most pressing economic issues facing Yemen, its worst crisis after six years of conflict.”, declares Head of the OECD Middle East and Africa Division, Mr. Carlos Conde. “The country, more than ever, needs strong economic policies and institutions to be able to engage on a long-term recovery and reconstruction path.”
“I highly appreciate the support of the OECD, and the European Union for financing of this project, which enhances the resilience of the Yemeni economy. I also look forward to implementing the project's activities to build and develop the capacities of government economic institutions to play their role in recovery, reconstruction and sustainable development of Yemen,” asserts the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation D.r. Waed Abdullah Badhib.
Funded by the EU, the OECD will mobilise policy instruments and tools under this project in support of Yemen, in close coordination with international partners and local stakeholders. The project aims to: improve capacities of Yemen’s central economic institutions; strengthen capacity for economic data collection and analysis; support public-private dialogue to enhance public advocacy and managerial skills by private sector institution and facilitate effective donor coordination and policy coherence in the economic sector.
