Europe Day in Zambia: celebrating youth engagement, unity, and partnership

This year’s Europe Day celebrations in Zambia focused on the future and the engagement of the next generation. Participation of the members of inaugural EU-Zambia Youth Sounding Board- 25 young women and men selected from all 10 Zambia’s provinces - brought fresh perspectives, energy, interaction and a youthful vibe to the  festivities. Youth Sounding Board corner became a space for discussion on what matters to Gen-Z and how to make sure their voice is heard.

The speech of Ambassador Stasiak focused on the EU as a global actor for peace and security and a reliable long-standing partner that brings tangible positive change to people in Zambia. In the election year, the encouragement for upholding democracy and efforts for peaceful, credible, transparent and inclusive elections was particularly important and appreciated by the youth representatives, as nearly 20% are the first-time voters.

Throughout the Europe Month,  the EU Delegation and Member States have organised a diverse programme of cultural and youth-focused activities.  Among the highlights, an acclaimed film Joyeux Noël and a debate on Franco-German relationship speaks to strong community engagement for peace, while the Black Forest photo exhibition by Italian photographer Giulio Lelardi leads the reflection on the impact of deforestation in Zambia and Malawi and how a gradual replacement of charcoal leads the conservation efforts.

Programme

The EU Delegation will host a series of youth-centred events focused on innovation, climate action and opportunities for young people, alongside music and film events that celebrate creativity, diversity and intercultural dialogue.
