The rehabilitation of the Great East Road in Chipata

The rehabilitated section from the Luangwa Bridge to Mwami, at the border with Malawi, totals 360 Km.  This project is the result of a joint undertaking where the Government of Zambia and Cooperating Partners –the European Union, the European Investment Bank, the French Agency for Development and the African Development Bank -  joined hands and worked together to upgrade the road for the benefit of the people of Zambia and the wider Southern Africa region. This improved piece of road is already contributing to an increased interregional connectivity and making a measurable difference for both ordinary people and businesses.

HE President Edgar Chagwa Lungu thanked all the Cooperating Partners for their "untiring support to Zambia's development"  and added that "National programmes, such as the accelerated national roads construction programme that my government has adopted over the years, continues to bear fruit in transforming the country from landlocked to a land linked country."
 

Illustrating how strong and unique the  Zambia-EU partnership in the infrastructure sector is, Ambassador Jankowski ended his address to the President by  stating that " In conclusion I would like to thank all partners for their valuable contribution and efforts. The result of our ‘partnership in action’ is the 360 km section of the spectacular Great East Road, one of the top quality roads in your country. The road serving Zambia, the wider region, but especially people like Mr Zulu. And my hope is that the road will be well preserved for many future generations and attract more investors and tourists."
