Sustainable Integrated Landscape Management of the Gonarezhou National Park and surrounding communities

The Overall Project Goal is to enhance social, economic, and ecological wellbeing and resilience of Gonarezhou National Park and neighbouring communities through Sustainable Integrated Landscape Management supported and incentivised by creation of a long-term Resilience Fund to support innovative and sustainable payments for measurable ecosystem services and environmental outcomes.

The Project – implemented by SAT WILD (Sustainable Agriculture Technology) in partnership with Gonarezhou Conservation Trust (GCT), and Cesvi - seeks to support greater social, livelihood, and environmental prosperity & resilience – in mitigation of resource depletion, land degradation, drought, and climate change, through:

• Supporting participatory resilience planning & natural resource management by District Authorities and local communities.

• Development of an internationally accredited REDD+ Carbon Credit Project and Solar Power Plant to support protection of the environment and to support developmental priorities of communities and local authorities in the long term.

• Development of tourism infrastructure and enterprise to enhance sustainability.

• Supporting implementation of developmental & resilience priorities identified in local Resilience Plans developed by District Authorities and local communities.

This will be achieved through pursuance of two Specific Objectives / Outcomes:

Specific Objective 1: Development of a comprehensive governance and management framework for more sustainable and inclusive land use, natural resource management and sustainable development planning in Gonarezhou National Park and neighbouring community areas. This specific objective will in turn be attained through two Key Results:

  1. Output 1.1: Integrated land-use and environment management framework developed for Gonarezhou and communities neighbouring the Park – through development of integrated Local Resilience Plans by means of inclusive & participatory stakeholder engagement and futures planning.
  2.  Output 1.2: Community Based Organisations (CBOs) established and supported for community-level ownership and co-implementation of local resilience plans and sustainable resource management.

Specific Objective 2: Community Environment & Development Fund (CEDF) established to support implementation of developmental priorities and integrated landscape management promoting improved social, economic, and ecological resilience in Gonarezhou NP and neighbouring communities.

Creation, sustainability, and implementation of the CEDF will be achieved through the following Key Results:

  1. Output 2.1: Restructure SAT-WILD for long-term administration of the CEDF.
  2. Output 2.2: Renewable Energy infrastructure, partnership(s) and revenue stream established for the CEDF.
  3. Output 2.3: Internationally accredited REDD+ carbon credit scheme established to provide revenue to the CEDF.
  4. Output 2.4: Nature-based tourism infrastructure, partnership(s) and revenue stream established for a community conservation area(s) and / or Gonarezhou NP.
  5. Output 2.5: Mechanism for payment of innovative incentives & investments from CEDF established & implemented in accordance with Local Resilience Plans & TORs agreed with communities
