09.03.2026

To mark International Women’s Day, the Director General of the European Union Military Staff (EUMS) and Director of the Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC), Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan, hosted a Women’s Lunch together with the female members of both the EUMS and MPCC. The event provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the valuable contributions of women serving within the two organisations and also to acknowledge the important topic of Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and its relevance to the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations.

During the lunch, Lieutenant General van der Laan delivered a short speech, expressing his appreciation to the women in attendance and thank them for their outstanding contributions to both organisations. He highlighted the professionalism, dedication, expertise, and commitment they demonstrate in the execution of their daily responsibilities, which are essential to the effective functioning and success of the EUMS and MPCC.

He further emphasised the importance of the WPS agenda - why it matters to the EU operationally; how it strengthens the effectiveness of EU missions and operations; and thirdly the importance of improved participation, particularly in leadership roles, to ensure its full implementation.

In closing, he stated that gender equality is not limited to a single day of recognition each year but rather represents a fundamental principle that guides the work carried out within the EUMS and MPCC in the planning and execution of the EU’s CSDP missions and operations.
