EU Statement delivered by HR/VP Josep Borrell at the 12th Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on 23 September 2021 in New York

23.09.2021

“Promoting the entry into force and universalisation of the CTBT remains a top priority for the European Union”. Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

At the biennial Article XIV Conference, held on 23-24 September in New York, which coincides with the Treaty’s 25th anniversary, the HRVP Borrell calls on all States - in particular the remaining Annex II States - to sign and ratify the Treaty without any preconditions or delay.

At times of geopolitical competition and multilateralism being under increasing pressure, the HRVP stresses the need to redouble efforts to uphold and strengthen the international non-proliferation and disarmament architecture, by promoting the CTBT’s entry into force.

The EU has been and will continue to be a strong supporter of the Treaty and its Organisation and will continue to use every opportunity in international fora to advocate the CTBT’s entry into force.
