The EU condemns in the strongest terms the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse of Haiti and the attack on the first lady, and offers its full support to the people of Haiti.

This cowardly and abhorrent act exacerbates instability in the country and risks fuelling even further the spiral of violence in which the country has been caught up for far too long.

Haiti is in the midst of a political and humanitarian crisis, and the security situation continues to deteriorate, casting doubt on the ability of the state to protect its citizens.

Respect for the provisions of the constitution is vital during this difficult period. The European Union will give its full support for the restoration of a viable political situation for the benefit of the citizens of Haiti.
