High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell in Turkey for the SEECP Summit and Antalya Diplomatic Forum and first mission to Lebanon
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, will travel to Turkey and Lebanon from today, 17 June, until Sunday, 20 June. This afternoon, High Representative Borrell represents the EU at the South East Europe Cooperation Platform (SEECP) Summit, hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as outgoing SEECP chairman, in Antalya, Turkey. During the SEECP annual summit, participants will discuss new approaches and solutions to strengthen regional cooperation and global governance. In the margins, High Representative Josep Borrell will have bilateral meetings with the President of North Macedonia Stevo Pendarovski and President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani.
On Friday, High Representative Borrell will attend the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, where he will participate in the panel Global Governance: Approaches for Global Solutions. He will have bilateral meetings with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and the Foreign Ministers of Iran, Venezuela, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will make his first official visit to Lebanon on behalf of the EU, at a very critical moment for the country, which is suffering from several crises. His visit comes at a time when the Lebanese political leadership urgently needs to form a government and implement key reforms. He will deliver key messages to the Lebanese leadership, and convey the EU’s solidarity with the Lebanese people in these extremely difficult times.
During his visit, Josep Borrell will have meetings with Lebanese political and military leaders, as well as with organisations from civil society. He will meet, among others, President of the Republic, Michel Aoun; Caretaker Prime Minister, Hassan Diab; Prime Minister-designate, Saad Hariri; Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Zeina Akar Adra; and Speaker of the Parliament, Nabih Berri. On Saturday 19, High Representative Borrell will have a press point at 09:45 CET (10.45 EET). His remarks will be then shared in writing on the EEAS website.
