#HumanRightsPower – social media campaign to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

21.09.2018

This week, the EU Delegation in Geneva kicked off a social media campaign to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The campaign was launched in the margins of the 39th session of the Human Rights Council in support of the efforts by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to raise awareness around the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Bracelets with sentences of the Declaration were widely distributed in Geneva's UN Palais des Nations, encouraging participants to publicly support the universal values by posting their photo on social media with the hashtags #HumanRightsPower and #Standup4HumanRights.

Respect for human rights is a founding value of the European Union. Particularly in light of this year's 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Union strongly supports the pledge by the UN Secretary General to raise the profile of human rights and to make prevention and sustainable peace a priority of the UN, by tackling root causes of conflicts, including by addressing human rights violations and abuses. The campaign aims to publicly show the EU's support to the UN human rights system, particularly at a time, when there have been serious negative trends around the world in human rights. It will continue in various parts of the world until 10 December 2018, when Human Rights Day is observed.
