Nicaragua: Declaration by the High Representative Josep Borrell on criticism against the Spanish Government

The European Union supports the Spanish Government in the face of the unacceptable and baseless accusations made by the Nicaraguan authorities, which have led to the Spanish Ambassador to Nicaragua being convened for consultation.

The EU is united in condemning the systematic repression by the Nicaraguan authorities and in defending democracy, the rule of law, human rights and a critical but respectful dialogue with Nicaragua.

The President Daniel Ortega and Vice-President Rosario Murillo must stop this downward spiral, change course, free all political prisoners, and open up to dialogue.
