The EU EOM presented its final report with key recommendations
The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has returned to Honduras to present the final report on the work carried out during the general elections of 28 November 2021, which also contains recommendations on possible reforms in future electoral processes in the country.
The Chief of mission and Member of the European Parliament, Željana Zovko, and her deputy Manuel Sánchez de Nogués gave a press conference in Tegucigalpa today.
In addition to the findings of the mission, Ms. Zovko outlined the eight recommendations considered as priorities contained in the report.
“I would like to encourage the Honduran authorities, political parties and civil society to make use of the recommendations that we will be discussing with them in the coming days,” she explained. “From now on, a new stage is opened to improve the electoral processes in the country, in accordance with the recommendations that we have presented today, for which they could count on the support of the Delegation of the European Union in Honduras, if necessary”, she added.
Ms Zovko also highlighted another aspect: “For the first time in the history of Honduras, a woman was elected President of the Republic. I think it would be good if more women were appointed to executive positions, which would encourage greater inclusion of women in political life”.
At the invitation of the Honduran authorities, the EU EOM carried out its work between 13 October and 17 December 2021. A delegation from the European Parliament joined the EU EOM to observe Election Day. Thus, the mission accredited a total of 78 observers from 22 EU Member States and Canada.
