PRESS RELEASE

Roundtable discussion by the EU Election Observation Mission – Honduras 2025 on the implementation of its recommendations

Tegucigalpa, 6 March 2026 – Yesterday, the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) organised a discussion to talk about the possible implementation of the 24 recommendations included in the final report presented last Tuesday.

Around 90 people participated in the event, including representatives from Honduran authorities, electoral institutions, political parties, the media, and civil society organisations.

During the opening, Tania Marques, the deputy chief of the EU EOM, explained the purpose of the event: “Through this roundtable, we aim to bring together the various stakeholders in the electoral process to share the recommendations set out in our report and encourage an inclusive dialogue on possible reforms”. She also stressed the importance of this process transcending partisan interests: “This dialogue must go beyond the control of political parties and contribute to electoral an reform that strengthens the confidence, credibility and impartiality of the system”.

The four-hour roundtable discussion provided an opportunity to debate recommendations in various areas, including the legal framework, the electoral system and registration of political parties, electoral administration, the media and social networks, campaign financing and guarantees for political participation.

At the end of the event, two journalists summarised the conclusions of the discussion, agreeing on the need for comprehensive electoral reforms involving various sectors of society.

Tania Marques also highlighted the level of participation in the event: “The large turnout at this discussion demonstrates Honduran society's commitment to democracy and its aspiration to consolidate the rule of law, as was already evident in the high level of citizen participation during the election”.

The event was attended by prominent authorities, including Ana Paola Hall, president of the CNE, Mario Flores, president of the TJE, Tania Pinto, second vice president of the National Congress, and María Antonieta Mejía, vice president of the Republic of Honduras.

At the close of the event, Tania Marques noted: “This discussion concludes the work of the EU EOM after several months of activity. During our time in the country, the Honduran authorities expressed their interest in advancing electoral reforms, particularly in the National Congress, where a special commission has been established for this purpose”.
