EUBAM Libya and EU partners visit the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Tripoli

EUBAM Libya Head of Mission, Mr. Frederik Petersen and Head of Operations, Mr. Alessio Zuccarini, together with the EU Ambassador to Libya, Mr. Nicola Orlando and the Operation Commander of Operation IRINI, Rear Admiral Marco Casapieri, received a very warm welcome by Libyan partners at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Tripoli on 2 February.

The visit formed part of the European Union’s broader support and technical assistance in the maritime domain, aimed at enhancing safety at sea and strengthening operational capacities of Libyan maritime institutions. Marking a milestone in cooperation, this was the first joint engagement at the MRCC involving both EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) operational missions present in Libya. The visit highlighted the complementary roles played by EUBAM and Operation IRINI in supporting maritime governance and security.

During the visit, MRCC representatives briefed the delegation on recent progress in strengthening search and rescue capabilities, coordination mechanisms, and operational readiness. Discussions focused on identifying opportunities for further capacity building and exploring future initiatives that could benefit from coordinated support by both missions.

The exchange allowed participants to assess how ongoing EU – Libya partnerships can continue to support Libyan efforts to enhance maritime safety, while ensuring that support initiatives remain mutually reinforcing and aligned with local operational needs.

The joint presence of EUBAM and Operation IRINI underscored the EU’s integrated approach to maritime cooperation, reaffirming continued partnership with Libyan authorities in promoting safety, coordination, and stability in the maritime domain.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to continue working closely with Libyan counterparts to further strengthen search and rescue capacities and maritime cooperation.
