EUBAM Libya Trains 30 Libyan Officers on Newly Donated X-Ray Scanners

EUBAM Libya has strengthened Libya’s capacity to counter illicit trafficking by training 30 officers from the Narcotics and Psychotropic Drugs Control Agency (ANGA) and the Libyan Customs Authority (LCA) on the use of advanced handheld x-ray scanners. The two-day training, held on 21-22 August at ANGA headquarters in Tripoli, followed the donation of 10 advanced handheld X-ray scanners to Libyan counterparts.

The training opened with a day of theoretical modules to familiarise participants with the scanners’ functions, including how to interpret images and distinguish different types of materials. On the second day, the focus shifted to practice: officers operated the x-ray scanners directly, applying their knowledge in realistic simulations of border searches and checkpoint inspections. Participants also received instruction on basic maintenance and safety protocols, ensuring the equipment can be used effectively and safely for years to come.

Participant Colonel Essam Sasi, Libyan Customs Authority: “This training made it clear that the X-ray scanner will greatly facilitate our work by allowing for faster detection and inspection when something is suspicious. The EUBAM trainers were extremely thorough, and their explanation of how to use the X-ray was clear and concise. I was able to get all the information I needed to operate it effectively."

Participant Sergeant Ahmed Fleet, ANGA: “The training with the EUBAM Libya mission was an excellent experience. Thanks to the cooperation of the members and trainers, it was easy to learn how to use the device, which stands out for its accuracy, speed of detection, and light weight."

"This training represents a practical step in strengthening Libya’s border management capacities," said EUBAM Deputy Head of Mission Frederik Petersen at the certificate handover. "EUBAM is not just about donating equipment, we are here to empower our partners with the tools they need. These scanners will directly support the daily work of Libyan officers in protecting borders and communities."

The donation of the equipment and the concluded training are a testament to the enduring partnership between EUBAM and Libya's security institutions. EUBAM extended its gratitude to ANGA and its leadership for hosting the training, as well as to the LCA for the commitment demonstrated to this joint endeavor.

EUBAM Libya remains committed to assisting ANGA and the LCA in strengthening their capabilities to fight against drug and weapons trafficking and the smuggling of goods.
