Forensics: Libyan Criminal Investigators and EUBAM contribute to international conference in Rome

EUBAM Libya and the Libyan Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs participated in the international conference “Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences in International Critical Contexts: the Experience of Tor Vergata University”, held in Rome October 2025. The two-day event gathered leading experts, academics, and practitioners to exchange best practices and strengthen cooperation in the field of forensics, particularly in contexts marked by large-scale humanitarian challenges.

The opening session featured institutional greetings from the Rector of the University, Prof. Nathan Levialdi Ghiron; representatives from the Italian Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Major General Mahmoud Ashour al-Ajelly, from the Libyan Director of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID); and EUBAM.  L Speakers underlined the importance of strengthening Libya–EU cooperation in forensic capacity building and the shared commitment to enhancing the rule of law.

Presenting EUBAM Libya’s experience in the forensic field 

The Mission also contributed a dedicated presentation entitled “EUBAM Libya’s experience in the forensic field”. The session highlighted the Mission’s ongoing support to Libyan partners, including the development of national forensic capabilities, technical assistance, and training programmes.

The conference featured a rich series of thematic interventions addressing a wide range of critical forensic topics:

-the Libyan experience with mass graves and migration flows,

-forensic toxicology,

-the role of forensic medicine in post-war contexts,

-emerging technologies, nanomaterials and protective devices,

-forensic genetics, anthropology, and the operational challenges linked to crisis environments.

Building capacity through expert dialogue

Throughout the event, representatives of the CID, Tor Vergata University and international academic institutions engaged in constructive dialogue aimed at improving forensic methodologies and strengthening collaborative approaches.

The second day concluded with the delivery of certificates for the third Training on the Job Course, marking another important milestone in the partnership between EUBAM Libya and Tor Vergata University. This initiative reflects EUBAM Libya’s ongoing commitment to supporting Libyan forensic institutions through continuous training, capacity building, and the promotion of international best practices.
