1.Why did you apply to the Mission?

I applied for this European Mission because I believe it offers a unique opportunity for personal growth, broadening my horizons beyond the private market. Joining such an international organization offers the opportunity to contribute to significant and high-impact projects on a global scale. It allows me to collaborate within a diverse team and gain valuable insights into different cultures, perspectives and approaches, to problem solving. In addition, working in an international organization provides a platform where to develop new skills, expand my professional network and make a difference in the world by addressing the most pressing global challenges. I am looking forward to this new experience and to bring my experience in the private market in other areas in order to effectively contribute to the objectives of the European Mission and to fulfill the mandate of EUBAM Libya in my area of expertise.

2. What is your role within the Mission?

Within the mission, I have two roles:

First of all, I hold the position of Logistics Officer, with responsibilities usually associated with a senior position. My main duties include overseeing a range of logistics operations, such as procurement, logistics distribution and internal process improvement. In addition, I manage a team in Tunisia and Libya, oversee the real estate offices, accommodation and other important issues related to the welfare of the Mission and Mission staff.

Secondly, I am also part of the PEER support team which stands for “Peer Support post Critical Incident”. Motivated by a genuine desire to offer guidance and support to people in need, I draw on my life experience and my specialized training in high-intensity emotion management to promote a culture of well-being.

3. Who do you work closely with?

In my role, I work closely with various teams, among national and internationals including Movement Control (MOVCON), Communication and Information System (CIS), Finance, Procurement, Human Resources (HR) and the Operations team. Collaboration with the MOVCON team ensures smooth movement and transportation logistics. We liaise with the CIS team to ensure effective communication and information management. Interaction with the HR team helps in addressing personnel-related matters. Lastly, close coordination with the Operations team ensures overall operational efficiency and effectiveness.

4. What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I like most about my job is the opportunity to work in a diverse team and collaborate closely with different departments where English, Italian, Spanish and French are assets languages and find out solutions when required. This international and dynamic environment allows me to learn and contribute in various areas of specialization, which is conductive to my professional growth as I am the youngest professional in CSDP Missions performing this job position. In addition, I enjoy the challenges of overseeing logistics operations and finding effective solutions to ensure smooth operations. The ability to make a significant impact by facilitating efficient processes and supporting mission objectives gives me great satisfaction. Overall, the combination of teamwork, problem solving and contributing to a broader goal makes my job truly enjoyable.

5. How do you like living in Libya and especially in Palm City?

Living in Libya, particularly within a closed compound during times of conflict, provides a unique and challenging experience. It's important to note that this lifestyle is not suitable for everyone, as it demands a strong and resilient mindset. Being in good physical and mental health is crucial for effectively navigating these challenges. Drawing from my military background, I feel significantly more prepared to confront such circumstances. Security should always be a top priority, and staying well-informed is key.

In an environment characterized by heightened emotions and inherent risks, effectively managing and navigating emotions can be challenging. It is precisely in such contexts that my dedication to understanding human behavior on stress situations, points out my passion for psychology which drives me to contribute to the PEER team.

6. What do you like to do in your leisure time?

Overall, my free time is a mix of family calls, academic activities, physical activities, and culinary adventures, which allows me to pursue my passions and relax.

7. How would you describe your Libyan colleagues?

I have had a multitude of experiences with my Libyan colleagues, making it difficult to choose just one to highlight. What stands out to me is the refreshing energy and youthful spirit they bring to the team. Despite the age difference between my Libyan and Tunisian colleagues and international, their presence creates a harmonious and well-balanced dynamic in every aspect.

8. What is your dream holiday destination?

Spending time with my loved ones, laugh a lot and, above all, having fun together.

9. What is one of your favorite books?

Although I don't have a favorite book in particular, "Around the World in Eighty Days" and "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne have always been special in my childhood. Currently, I am immersed in reading "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries.

10. From your previous experience, what advice would you give your colleagues and friends about Mission life?

I'll start with the key of adaptability and the fact that you don't need to have experience in a previous assignment. I will say to him or her “Be prepared for a dynamic and constantly changing environment. Flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to new circumstances will greatly contribute to your success” and above all I will say to him or her “Believe in yourself because if you don't do it who will do it for you!?”.

Without forgetting these different points that I would say around a good meal with friends:

Prioritize safety at all times and follow safety and security protocols. Updated with latest outcomes about the local situation and look out for the well-being of yourself and others.

Maintain open lines of communication with your team, colleagues and local counterparts. Clear and concise communication is essential to effective operations, collaboration and drafting of compiled and timely reports.

Demonstrate respect for local culture and traditions. Understanding and appreciating cultural nuances will facilitate positive relationships and smooth operations.

Expect challenges and obstacles along the way. Approach them with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset. Look for creative ways to overcome obstacles and continually improve processes.

Encourage teamwork and collaboration among your colleagues. Leveraging each other's strengths and working together will enhance effectiveness and efficiency.

Life on assignment can be demanding, both physically and mentally. Make it a priority to take care of yourself, maintain a good work/life balance, and seek help when needed.
