“I am convinced that EUCAP plays an important role in strengthening human security in Mali.”
Which aspects of your stay made you particularly proud?
One example comes to mind that is not necessarily well known: we supported efforts to bring closer together the Internal Security Forces and civil society within the Consultative Security Committees. These committees bring together representatives of civil society, village chiefs, and security forces, and constitute truly inclusive spaces for security.
Another essential point: our partnership with the Malians. The Members of the Mission and I were always warmly welcomed, and our contribution was appreciated. This deeply touched me, and I would like to thank our Malian partners for their trust.

What are the key achievements of the Mission during your mandate?
First, I would like to say that these achievements are primarily attributable to our Malian partners, and I am very honored that we were able to support them in this process.
To name a few examples, together with our partners, we expanded the radio communication network between Bamako, Ségou, and Sikasso, and supported reforms of the Crisis and Disaster Management Coordination Center. This has helped Mali in its response to crises.
In the field of integrated border management, the Mission supported the fight against migrant smuggling, the protection of vulnerable populations, and institutional coordination. For example, we assisted in the operationalisation of the Inter-Forces Center in Kourémalé, a key project for securing border areas in southern Mali.
We also contributed to improving access to justice by supporting the training of stakeholders in the judicial sector and strengthening infrastructure, such as the “Maison de la Justice” in Mopti.
Finally, through numerous training activities, we helped strengthen the capacities of the internal security forces.

Where do you see the added value of the Mission for Mali and its security challenges?
I am convinced that the Mission can support Mali in several key areas, including strengthening the capacities and interoperability of the security forces, border security, access to justice, and civilian crisis management.
And, if desired, we are also ready to support Mali in addressing future challenges, for example in the field of climate security.

Why is it important for the Mission to continue operating in Mali?
I am convinced that EUCAP plays an important role in strengthening human security in Mali. We are among the key international actors in the security sector, and we maintain good cooperation with our partners.
Within the framework of the European Union’s comprehensive approach, which spans from development to security, this cooperation serves the interests of both Malian and European populations in the face of security challenges that cross borders and affect their daily lives.
I would therefore like to express my deep gratitude to the European Union and its Member States, who have always supported this Mission and contributed to efforts for peace and security in Mali and the Sahel region.
