Donations of Training Materials to support Bosaso port Maritime police unit (BP-MPU)
Bosaso Port Maritime Police Unit (BP-MPU) is the section of the largest Somalia’s police deployment in the region and comes under Puntland’s police force. The unit was created to deal with civil maritime law enforcement activities particularly to provide security along Bossaso coastline and port.
Since its establishment, the European Union Capacity Building mission (EUCAP) in Somalia is supporting Somalia security sector, including strengthening maritime security and capacitating law enforcement agencies such as the BP-MPU on maritime security, in collaboration with Somalia’s security leaderships.
Recently, in Puntland, EUCAP Somalia started to deliver a one-year training on navigation and maritime communication for BP-MPU. This training aims at supporting coast guard officers at sea to ensure a robust communication system between them and all relevant sea operators such as harbor surveillance, security control and port management.
The training is covering basics of coastal navigation, search, classification and identification of vessels approaching the port and maritime communication elements according to international standards. The course is addressed to patrol boats crews and Operation Centre personnel for a total of 20 people.
EUCAP donated BP-MPU equipment such as navigation charts, binoculars, flashlights, that was utilized during the training to give trainees knowledge about how the industry operates and what standard procedures should be followed. The training contributed to enhance coast guard officer’s knowledge to secure Puntland coast.
