Synopsis

Amidst the joys and sorrows of post-war Rome, Delia attempts to maintain a semblance of normal life, despite mental and physical abuses from her husband, hoping that this sacrifice will help her eldest Marcella marry into a middle-class family. But they soon realise that this arranged marriage is unlikely to bring Marcella happiness. Meanwhile, Delia receives a letter that gives her hope, and makes her dream of a better future.
