EU Mission in Armenia officially opened its operational base FOB Kapan, the fourth out of six planned
During the opening speeches, Markus Ritter expressed his sincere hope that this step would “positively contribute to the EU’s efforts supporting the peace process in the region and to increased sense of security and safety among local population.” Deputy Head of EUDEL Armenia Jan Plesinger added that it is “this forward operating base will strengthen the Mission’s ability to monitor the border areas.” Governor of Syunik Robert Ghukasyan reiterated the importance of the Mission’s presence in Syunik for the people and for peace.

According to Markus Ritter, the Mission is “one step closer” to its operational capability, with in total six operational bases from which EUMA sends its patrols to the border areas. The two remaining operational bases will be opened in Ijevan in September and a month later in Yeghegnadzor. The operating base in Kapan is particularly important for the mission due to its strategic location and the area of interest for the mission’s mandate.
EUMA is a non-armed, civilian and non-executive mission with the aim to observe and report to the EU on the security situation on the ground. The mission is deployed on the Armenian side of the international border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with Headquarters in Yeghegnadzor, planned six Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) and a Support and Liaison office in Yerevan.
