HoM's Statement on the Start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign
November 25th marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence.
This year EUMA stands with the United Nations and the international community’s call to end digital violence against all women and girls.
Digital violence can take on many forms and have real-world consequences. Online hate, stalking, and abuse may translate into in-person aggression, harassment, and violence. Unfortunately, women and girls are most often the targets of these attacks.
Any form of gender-based violence is an attack on gender equality and a violation of human rights. With the accession of the EU to the Istanbul Convention on 1 October 2023, and the adoption of the EU Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence in May 2024, the EU underlined its commitment to end gender-based violence.
EUMA recognizes that tackling digital violence requires not only advocacy but also concrete internal action.
Within the Mission, EUMA is:
- Promoting digital literacy and online safety, ensuring that personnel are equipped to identify, prevent, and respond to digital harassment or abuse.
- Fostering a culture of respect and accountability, both online and offline, as part of its broader commitment to gender equality and human rights.
We reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where all people can live without the fear of gender-based violence in all spaces, including virtual ones.
EUMA invites you to learn more about the stories of those who have been impacted by online violence and to #ACTtoEndViolence.
