EUMAM MOZ Force Commander highlights the importance of analysing the security situation in Mozambique
Under the theme “Strengthening the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces for Sustainable Security”, Brigadier General Sérgio Estrela’s presentation focused on the evolving security situation in the north of the country, highlighting the geographical spread of attacks, the mobility of insurgent groups and the adaptation of their tactics. The Force Commander stressed the importance of understanding these dynamics to identify solutions that contribute to peace and stability in Mozambique.
During the presentation, data on insurgent activity over the preceding five months were shared, covering a period in which 154 attacks were recorded. Although violence remains concentrated mainly in Cabo Delgado Province, incursions into areas further south and west of the country were also identified.
The data presented indicated incidents across 16 districts – 15 in Cabo Delgado and one in Niassa – spanning 120 localities. This geographical spread highlights the challenges posed by the mobility of armed groups and their ability to conduct attacks in different parts of the country, making it more difficult for the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces (FADM) to respond.

Brigadier General Sérgio Estrela also addressed cases of kidnapping followed by ransom demands, highlighting the importance of monitoring the evolution of insurgent tactics to understand the challenges on the ground and support the development of appropriate responses.
The partnership between the European Union and Mozambique has contributed to strengthening the capabilities of the FADM. In this context, EUMAM MOZ supports the development of their autonomy and operational capabilities, contributing to a more effective response to national and regional security challenges and to Mozambique’s efforts to achieve peace.
