Maputo, Mozambique - Ana Gamboa, from the Portuguese Navy, is on her second international mission in Africa in the space of a year, now as part of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ), where she will perform the role of Joint Medic and Role 1 Chief.

Lieutenant Ana Gamboa, with 28 years old, from the city of Guarda, recently began a new mission at EUMAM MOZ, after having been part of the Open Sea Mission, where she visited eight African countries and logged around 900 hours of navigation.

With a degree in medicine and a strong sense of mission, Ana Gamboa joined the Portuguese Navy in 2024 and has already served in several units, such as the Naval Medical Centre and the Marine Corps. In Mozambique, the young doctor will face different challenges, notably providing medical support to deployed military personnel and advising the health teams of the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM).

‘I see this opportunity to join a European Union mission and work with military personnel from 12 different countries as a great learning opportunity,’ says Ana Gamboa, who also highlights the importance of ensuring the quality and continuity of medical care during the mission. The new EUMAM MOZ member also reveals that she is motivated by the chance to get to know the country where her grandparents lived for several years.
