EUMC Mini Away Day- ASPIDES Contributing to EU Maritime Security Challenges and Opportunities

Brussels, February 20th, 2026, - Captain Vasileios Tsiouflias (EL, N), Chief of Staff of the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation ASPIDES, participated on a workshop, addressing coherent and effective EU maritime engagement and security. 

EUMC Mini Away Day- ASPIDES Contributing to EU Maritime Security Challenges and Opportunities

Under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Ministry of Defence organised a European Union Military Committee (EUMC) Mini Away Day workshop on EU Maritime Security Challenges and Opportunities, bringing together senior military representatives, EU officials, operational commanders, and legal experts.

During the workshop, Captain Tsiouflias met with Dr. Nicholas A. Ioannides, Deputy Minister for Migration and International Protection of Cyprus. Discussions emphasized on the role of the Operation in supporting EU efforts and reinforcing the EU’s position as a key global security provider. Key points also included, ASPIDES’ contribution to the EU’s integrated Crisis Response, where military, diplomatic and intelligence components work together to enhance security and crisis management effectiveness.
