The Deputy Director-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations visits EUTM MOZ

Maputo, Mozambique – The European Union Training Mission Mozambique (EUTM MOZ) Mission Force Commander (MFCdr), Commodore Martins de Brito, welcomed the Deputy Director-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), Michael Koehler, to the Headquarters in Maputo, on April 26, 2023.

 

The EUTM MOZ also had the privilege of having the Ambassador of the European Union to Mozambique, Mr. Antonino Maggiore, in attendance.

The visit was a useful opportunity to describe the Deputy Director-General for ECHO, and his delegation, how EUTM MOZ is contributing to the capability building of the Mozambican armed forces’ units, selected to compose future Quick Reaction Forces (QRF).

The EUTM MOZ Command Group also provided an overview of the EUTM MOZ’ mission, roles, capabilities and current activities, and main ongoing projects within the headquarters and the three training camps located in Katembe, Dongo and Mavalane.

The EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department has been providing assistance to people in need since 1992. Its annual humanitarian budget is just over €1 billion, and helps millions of people across the globe each year.

The EUTM MOZ has 118 military and civilian personnel from 12 European Union member states - Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden. Portugal currently contributes with 65 military to the EUTM MOZ.

The EUTM MOZ mission is to provide training and support to the Mozambican armed forces to protect the civilian population and restore security in the Cabo Delgado province. The mission has a non-executive mandate and will end two years after the mission has reached Full Operational Capability. The EUTM MOZ is one of the tools to address the crisis in Cabo Delgado, in conjunction with support for peacebuilding, conflict prevention and dialogue support, humanitarian assistance and development cooperation.
