The Director MPCC visits EUTM Mozambique

The Director of the Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC) and Mission Commander of the European Union Training Mission Mozambique (EUTM MOZ), Vice Admiral Hervé Bléjean, concluded a five-day official visit to Mozambique, from 13 to 17 Feb 2023.

 

Admiral Bléjean was welcomed by the EUTM MOZ Mission Force Commander, Commodore Martins de Brito, who provided an initial update on the current activities, the challenges, and the main ongoing projects of the Mission.

The visit included a courtesy call with the Chief of Defense of the Mozambican Defense Armed Forces (FADM), Admiral Joaquim Mangrasse with whom he had a bilateral discussion on the strategic progress of the mission.

During his visit, the Director MPCC also visited the two Quick Reaction Forces (QRFs) and the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) training camps located in Katembe, Chimoio and Mavalane to observe how the training activities have been developed.

The Mission Commander had the opportunity to go to Cabo Delgado and visit three different locations. At the FADM Pemba Naval Base and Maringanha Base, he was briefed on the role, mission and capabilities of the bases and engaged with soldiers that have been trained by EUTM MOZ and are now part of the QRFs.

At the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission In Mozambique (SAMIM) Headquarters, Admiral Bléjean met the SAMIM’s Deputy Commander and received a briefing on the SAMIM’s mission and activities developed.

At the Joint Task Force Headquarters of the Rwandan Security Forces, the Director MPCC discussed operational matters with the Mission Force Commander, Major General Eugene Nkubito, and focused on the achievements of the Rwandan Security Forces in fighting terrorism in Cabo Delgado.

Admiral Bléjean also had the opportunity to discuss the recent arrival and the important collaboration of the French Mobile Training Team from the Forces Armées dans la Zone Sud de l'Océan Indien (FAZSOI), with its Commander, Brigadier General Laurent Cluzel.

This official visit included a Key Leader Engagement with His Excellency the French Ambassador, Yann Pradeau, and His Excellency the US Ambassador, Peter Hendrick Vrooman.

Finalising his visit to the Mission’s HQ, the Mission Commander took the occasion to address and thank the staff for their work and efforts in supporting the capacity building of the Mozambican QRFs, enabling them to contribute to restore safety and security in Cabo Delgado.

The EUTM MOZ mission following its mandate provides training and support to the Mozambican armed forces in order to develop 11 QRFs that will contribute to protect the civilian population and restore security in the Cabo Delgado province. The mission has a non-executive mandate and will end two years after the Full Operational Capability. The EUTM MOZ is one of the tools to address the crisis in Cabo Delgado, in conjunction with support for peacebuilding, conflict prevention and dialogue support, humanitarian assistance and development cooperation.
