EUTM MOZ hosts the Portuguese Defense Policy Deputy Director

Maputo, Mozambique – The European Union Training Mission Mozambique (EUTM MOZ) Mission Force Commander (MFCdr), Commodore Martins de Brito, welcomed the Portuguese Defense Policy Deputy Director, Brigadier General Ana Baltazar, to the Headquarters, on March 24, 2023.

 

The visit allowed the EUTM MOZ Command Group to brief BGen. Ana Baltazar on EUTM MOZ’ roles, capabilities, mission, current activities and the main ongoing projects within the Headquarters and the three training camps located in Katembe, Dongo and Mavalane.

The EUTM MOZ MFCdr also provided the Portuguese Defense Policy Deputy Director an overview on EUTM MOZ contribution to the capability building of the Mozambican armed forces’ units, selected to compose future Quick Reaction Forces (QRF).

The aim of the visit was also to strength the working relationship, discuss topics of mutual interest, ongoing and future cooperation between the EUTM MOZ and Portugal.

The Portuguese Defense Policy Directorate ensures technical assistance in the formulation of major lines of action for defense policy, in strategic defense planning and in external defense relations. It is responsible for planning, studying and drawing up proposals for guidelines at a political-strategic level, monitoring and consider the respective execution, and for promoting and coordinating the policy of technical-military cooperation.

The EUTM MOZ has 118 military and civilian personnel from 12 European Union member states - Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden. Portugal currently contributes with 65 military to the EUTM MOZ.

The EUTM MOZ mission is to provide training and support to the Mozambican armed forces to protect the civilian population and restore security in the Cabo Delgado province. The mission has a non-executive mandate and will end two years after the mission has reached Full Operational Capability. The EUTM MOZ is one of the tools to address the crisis in Cabo Delgado, in conjunction with support for peacebuilding, conflict prevention and dialogue support, humanitarian assistance and development cooperation.
