EUTM MOZ welcomes the designated Coordinator of the Portuguese Defence Cooperation with Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique – The European Union Training Mission Mozambique (EUTM MOZ) Mission Force Commander (MFCdr), Commodore Martins de Brito, welcomed the designated Coordinator of the Portuguese Defence Cooperation with Mozambique, Brigadier General António Varregoso, to the Headquarters, on April 19, 2023.

 

The visit was a useful opportunity to provide the designated Coordinator of the Portuguese Defence Cooperation with Mozambique, and his delegation, an overview of the EUTM MOZ’ mission, roles, capabilities and current activities, and demonstrate the main ongoing projects within the headquarters and the three training camps located in Katembe, Dongo and Mavalane.

The EUTM MOZ Command also described BGen. António Varregoso how EUTM MOZ is contributing to the capability building of the Mozambican armed forces’ units, selected to compose future Quick Reaction Forces (QRF).

The aim of the visit was also to strength the working relationship, discuss topics of mutual interest, ongoing and future cooperation between the EUTM MOZ and Portugal.

EUTM MOZ MFCdr also had the opportunity to bid farewell to the still in charge Coordinator of the Portuguese Defence Cooperation, Commodore Cavaleiro Ângelo, that soon will end his tour in Mozambique and return to his country, and thank him for the extraordinary cooperation and contribution with our mission.

The Portuguese Defense Cooperation policy aims to contribute to international peace and security, to build and reform the security sector, to strengthen relations with Mozambique and to reinforce trust and visibility of Portugal in the context of international relations.

The EUTM MOZ has 118 military and civilian personnel from 12 European Union member states - Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden. Portugal currently contributes with 65 military to the EUTM MOZ.

The EUTM MOZ mission is to provide training and support to the Mozambican armed forces to protect the civilian population and restore security in the Cabo Delgado province. The mission has a non-executive mandate and will end two years after the mission has reached Full Operational Capability. The EUTM MOZ is one of the tools to address the crisis in Cabo Delgado, in conjunction with support for peacebuilding, conflict prevention and dialogue support, humanitarian assistance and development cooperation.
