EVSDA 2025 – ‘PRODUCT DESIGN’ SHORTLIST – CONG LAMP (HHN DESIGN)

*

The Cong Lamp concept was developed by me during my studies (2024–2025) as part of my exploration of lighting design and local materials. The project was created in Ho Chi Minh City, where I had the opportunity to work directly with bamboo and rattan – two materials deeply rooted in Vietnamese daily life.

Cong Lamp leverages the natural flexibility of bamboo, combined with seamless construction, to create a form that is both modern and evocative of the gentle qualities of traditional culture. The product is crafted from bent bamboo, hand-joined with mortise-and-tenon techniques, and covered with translucent paper, allowing light to diffuse softly and create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

The highlight of Cong Lamp lies in the use of bamboo as a sustainable, rapidly renewable, and eco-friendly material. Through this, the project not only offers a fresh perspective on bamboo in contemporary design but also demonstrates the potential of natural materials to produce aesthetically pleasing, functional, and environmentally responsible products.

With Cong Lamp, I hope users can experience the subtle interplay between tradition and modernity, familiarity and surprising novelty, in their interaction with light.
