EVSDA 2025 – ‘INNOVATION’ SHORTLIST – TÙ KAI CHICKEN PLAYGROUND SYSTEM (THINK PLAYGROUNDS)
*
With the belief that play is vital for children’s holistic development—physically, mentally, socially, and environmentally—the Tù Kai Chicken playground was installed at Thanh Kim Primary School (Sapa) in late 2024. More than a play space, it is a creative collaboration between Think Playgrounds and local children.
Instead of using ready-made designs, Think Playgrounds drew from children’s sketches, local animals, and ethnic embroidery motifs. Inspired by the H’Mông black chicken, the playground integrates slides, swings, climbing frames, and crawl spaces, combining local culture with active play. Recycled milk-carton panels further promote environmental sustainability.
Mountain schools like Thanh Kim often lack play spaces due to low awareness of play’s importance. The Tù Kai Chicken design not only addresses this gap but also celebrates local identity. Unlike mass-produced equipment, it tells a unique cultural story, using wood, tires, and recycled materials to create a sensory-rich and eco-friendly environment.
Developed through community consultation and co-construction, the project respects local values, reduces cultural imposition, and supports local livelihoods and skills.
